Avalanche in Gulmarg: Khelo India Winter Games 2024 athletes safe, say officials

Srinagar: In a reassuring update amidst the unfolding tragedy in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), officials have confirmed the safety of all athletes participating in the Khelo India Winter Games 2024.

The confirmation came through tweets from Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of the J&K Sports Council.

“The avalanche that hit Khilanmarg area of Gulmarg earlier this afternoon has not impacted athletes taking part in ski and snowboard events of Khelo India Winter Games 2024 at Kangdoori Phase 1. All necessary precautions have been taken for safety,” the tweet read.

This update followed an earlier tragic incident where a skier lost his life, and three others were rescued, with one individual still missing, after an avalanche struck Khilan Marg on Afarwat Peak in the renowned ski destination of Gulmarg on Thursday afternoon.
