Srinagar: To further streamline the public transport facilities in the city and minimize environmental pollution, Srinagar Smart City Ltd (SSCL) plans to add 100 additional electric buses to its fleet soon, officials said on Wednesday.

The objective of expanding the e-bus fleet in Srinagar is to further electrify the public transport industry in a bid to meet the growing environmental challenges with an eco-friendly strategy.

Srinagar, according to the officials, would have a total of 200 buses as part of the Prime Minister’s Seva Scheme by the end of 2025.

“It’s the vision of the Prime Minister to further electrify the public transport sector in the cities by 2030. Srinagar under the PM Seva scheme will have 100 more e-buses by the end of 2025. The service will not only help reduce growing environmental pollution but also alleviate the burden of private vehicles on the roads,” Anuj Kumar Malhotra, General Manager, SSCL told a select section of media here.

Kumar said the effort to completely electrify the public transport industry in the summer capital would involve purchasing more e-buses over the next few years.

“As stated earlier, e-buses have the potential to mitigate environmental pollution in Srinagar—that is if the public supports and adopts the service,” he added.
