Srinagar: The administration here has installed a Noise Monitoring System, a first-of-its-kind initiative, to examine noise pollution at the city centre Lal Chowk and its immediate surroundings.

Lal Chowk, according to the officials, has 24-hour traffic movement, which significantly contributes to noise pollution in the area and the vicinity.

Officials claimed that by sending daily data to the command and control centre, the Noise Monitoring System will help monitor noise pollution and its negative effects at Lal Chowk and its immediate surroundings.

Since Lal Chowk is a busy commercial area of the city, the regular movement of vehicles significantly contributes to a substantial amount of noise and air pollution that negatively impacts the health of people living around, Ramesh Kumar, Member Secretary of J&K Pollution Control Board told ‘Kashmir Images’.

It may be in place to mention that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the project under the Srinagar Smart City Limited in August last year. The move was aimed at mitigating the rising noise pollution levels at Lal Chowk.

Kumar said the project was launched under the auspices of the Srinagar Smarty City Ltd (SSCL), demonstrating the administration’s commitment to addressing the negative impacts of noise pollution in the overcrowded marketplace.

“Although noise pollution in urban settlements is a common problem as people living in immediate surroundings are badly impacted by its harmful consequences. The implementation of a Noise Monitoring System is a quite feasible approach to alleviate the negative effects of noise pollution in Lal Chowk and other locations in the future,” he added.

The initiative would serve as a model for other city areas, looking to adopt tech-enabled approaches to sustainable urban life, Kumar said.
