Srinagar: Six workers from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district died, and as many were injured in a road accident in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh on Monday morning, police said.

Lt Governor, Manoj Sinha, M Y Tarigami, former MLA of Kulgam and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference expressed shock over the accident.

Superintendent of Police, Shimla, Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said six people died when a truck they were travelling in fell into a gorge at Sunny Kangal Kararghat.

He said three persons died on the spot while three others died at a hospital. “Six others were also injured and are currently under treatment at the Indira Gandhi Medical College Hospital (IGMCH),” he said.

Confirming the incident, here the district administration Kulgam said that it is in touch with Shimla administration for transportation of last remains of all the deceased to their native villages.

It identified the deceased as Fareed Ahmad Deeded (24), Gulam Hussain Gorsi (43), Shabir Ahmad Deeded (19), Talib Hussain Tinda (23), Gulzar Ahmad Deeded (30), and Mushtaq Ahmad Deeded (30)—all residents of Kulgam.

The injured persons from here were identified as Manzoor Ahmed (20), son of Bashir Ahmed Denda; Talib Hussain (23), son of Abdul Gani Denda, from Kulgam; Aslam (24), son of Ismail Deeded from Anantnag.

Expressing grief over the tragic road accident, the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha in a tweet, said: “Anguished by the tragic road accident in Shimla, in which six Kulgam residents have lost their lives. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Directed DC Kulgam to provide all necessary assistance to the next of kin of each deceased.”

CPI(M) leader and former MLA from Kulgam M Y Tarigami said he was pained by the deaths and demanded adequate compensation for the victims.

“Deeply pained to learn about the tragic accident in Shimla in which 6 labourers from Kund area of Kulgam lost their lives and some suffered injuries. Requesting the @CMOFFICEHP to ensure the best possible treatment to the injured and facilitate the early return of bodies,” Tarigami, a four-time MLA from Kulgam, said in a post on X.

He also demanded compensation for the next of kin of the deceased labourers.

“Additionally, adequate compensation should be given to the families of the deceased,” he added.

J&K Peoples Conference posted on X: “Tragedy struck as 6 lives were lost & an equal number injured in a road accident in Shimla. A truck carrying individuals from Kulgam plunged into a gorge at Kararghat. Our thoughts are with the affected families, and we wish a speedy recovery to those undergoing treatment”.

Chairperson, District Development Council (DDC) Kulgam, M Afzal Parrey also expressed grief over the loss of precious lives in the road accident in Shimla, and urged the LG Manoj Sinha to provide compensation to the families of those who were killed and ensure the best possible treatment for the injured.
