Srinagar: Several areas in Jawahar Nagar and Rajbagh areas in Srinagar are facing acute water scarcity of drinking water as almost 60 per cent of tapes are running dry.

People living in the Jawahar Nagar area of Srinagar, particularly those living in the quarters owned by the Estates Department, have had no water supply for almost the last 8 days.

In the Rajbagh area too, people have registered the same complaint, sources said.

The residents of Daulatpora in the Chadoora area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Monday held a protest against the Jal Shakti Department for “failing” to provide safe drinking water for more than a month.

As per the news agency KNO, the residents took to the streets and blocked the Chadoora-Budgam road to register their protest against the department.

The protesters, mainly women, said they have to walk miles to fetch water from faraway places for daily use.

“We are not receiving water supply in these summer months. Our taps are dry and we crave for a drop of water,” said a woman.

The residents said the area has been facing immense hardships due to the water crisis and that they are forced to consume contaminated water.

“This department is not paying any heed to our sufferings. The officials there are not concerned about the people’s hardships,” they alleged.

Meanwhile, an official of the Jal Shakti Department said the area’s water supply has slightly decreased due to dry weather which occasionally causes water supply disruptions to some places.

We will try our best to ensure an adequate water supply to the area within 12 hours, he said.
