Team Srinagar wins Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament

Srinagar: The Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament being played since August 22, 2023, at Polo View Hockey Stadium, Srinagar, finished with exciting finals between Team Srinagar and Team Baramulla, which was won by Team Srinagar with a score of 2-0.

The tournament was organized by Headquarters 31 Sub Area of Chinar Corps in collaboration with J&K Sports Council and Hockey J&K, to commemorate National Sports Day 2023, which is celebrated in honor of Major Dhyan Chand, the greatest field hockey player of the country on his birthday on 29 August every year.

A total of 10 teams from 10 Districts of Kashmir participated in the tournament. The tournament was organized on a knock-out cum league basis. This is the first major Hockey Tournament in the newly built Astroturf Hockey Stadium. A total of nine league matches were played in the run-up to the final match. Gagandeep Singh (Srinagar Team) was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ medal for his outstanding performance in the final match. Munif Farooq Bhatt (Kulgam Team) was awarded ‘Best Goalkeeper’ of the tournament for displaying solid defense at the goal post and Arunpreet Singh (Srinagar Team) was adjudged as ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his exceptional performance throughout the tournament.

To promote women’s Hockey in Kashmir Valley, an exhibition match was played between Srinagar & Budgam before the commencement of the final match.

Justice N Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh was the Chief Guest for the event, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, Chinar Corps Commander, and Rajpal Singh, former Indian Hockey Team Captain were Special Guests for the finals. Chinar Corps stands firm with its commitment to the promotion of sports and shaping the talent amongst youth in Kashmir
