National Sports Day Week: Water Sports activities organised in Dal Lake to mark celebrations

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council (JKSC) organized a series of exhilarating sports activities this past week across the union territory of J&K, driving everyone to the festivities and embrace the spirit of healthy sports competitions.

On the penultimate day of the National Sports Day Week celebrations, JKSC’s Water Sports Centre organized multiple events in the scintillating waters of Dal Lake.

Secretary of Youth Services and Sports (YSS), Sarmad Hafeez flagged off marathon events in Kayaking and Canoeing at the Water Sports Centre.

Director YSS, Subash C. Chibber; Secretary, JKSC, Nuzhat Gull; Divisional Sports Officer, Muzaffar Hussain Wani; Director of Water Sports Centre, Bilquis Mir and other officers of the YSS department were also present on the occasion.

More than a hundred participants from the Water Sports Centre and Khelo India Water Sports Centre of Excellence participated in the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarmad Hafeez stressed for the active participation of youth in sports activities for the holistic development of the youth. He added that water sports activities offer thrilling and refreshing escape from the daily grind and the rush of adrenaline combined with the serene beauty of the Dal Lake is an unforgettable experience for anyone taking to the paddle. “I am sure there are many who are desperate to grab the gear and dive into the excitement that water sports have to offer and I can assure all those enthusiasts that the Sports department shall provide an opportunity to all of them, enabling the realization of their potential,” the Secretary remarked.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary JKSC said that National Sports Day week is a time to celebrate the power of sports and the countless benefits they bring to individuals and communities. “From promoting physical fitness to fostering teamwork and discipline, sports have a profound impact on our lives, adding that during this special week, we all came together to honour our sporting heroes, encourage active participation to inspire the next generation of athletes,” she said.

She further said, “Let’s unite, celebrate, and make this National Sports Day memorable and impactful.”

During the celebrations, the participants had drawn a lot of crowds to the Dal Lake. Pertinently, many sporting events were organised in the union territory during this week to pay glowing tributes to the sporting hero and Hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand.

Meanwhile, the grand final of the Hockey League being organized at Astroturf Polo ground Srinagar shall be played tomorrow.
