Minor boy killed, elderly man injured in wild animal attacks in north Kashmir

Baramulla: A six-year-old boy was killed in an attack by a leopard at Darakunjan Boniyar Uri while a 59-year-old man from Drangsoo village in Mawar Handwara was critically injured after being attacked by a bear.

Witnesses said that a leopard attacked on six-year-old Mukhtar Ahmad Sood, son of Ghulam Ahmad Sood of Darakunjan Boniyar Uri, and dragged him into nearby dense forests. Upon hearing his cries, family members and locals chased the leopard and managed to retrieve the boy’s body.

He was rushed to Primary Health Center Boniyar Uri where doctors declared him dead. The body was later handed over to family members after medico-legal formalities.

In the second such incident, an elderly man identified as Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Malik, son of Ghulam Hassan Malik, was attacked by a wild bear when he was working in his orchard at Mawar Handwara.

He sustained serious injuries and was taken to NTPHC Qalamabad for treatment, and later referred to GMC Handwara.

The day before, a six-year-old girl was killed by a leopard while a 39-year-old woman from the same village was critically injured in a bear attack in Drangsoo Mawar.
