Srinagar: In a remarkable display of courage and determination, a team of mountaineers led by Col Rajneesh Joshi of Garhwal Rifles achieved a historic feat by conquering Mount Kun (7103m) and Mount Nun (7135m) despite facing the harshest of weather conditions.

“The team embarked on this daring expedition on 11 July 23 under the banner of 19 Infantry Division and was flagged off by Maj Gen Rajesh Sethi, GOC 19 Infantry Division on 08 July 23 in a ceremonious event held at Baramulla,” said PRO (Defence), Srinagar.

“Braving the vagaries of inclement weather, the team successfully summited Mount Kun on 18 July 23 via a route that encompassed Camp 1, Camp 2, Camp 3, and ultimately the apex. This achievement not only marked the fastest climb to Mount Kun but also secured the record for the fastest ascent to a peak above 7000m. Adding a touch of serenity to the triumph, the climbers even practiced yoga at a staggering altitude of 7103m – a remarkable first,” the PRO said.

“Motivated by their initial victory, the mountaineers descended and swiftly turned their sights toward Mount Nun. The second phase of their journey commenced on 01 Aug 23, leading to yet another record-breaking triumph as they scaled Mount Nun in a remarkable 4-hour ascent from Camp 3. This accomplishment secured the titles of the fastest climb to Mount Nun and the fastest climb to a peak above 7000m breaking their own record of ascending Mount Kun, reiterating their mastery over the challenging terrain,” he said.

“Finally, the Mountaineers Team was Flagged In by Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, GOC, Chinar Corps on 09 Aug 23 at BB Cantt, Srinagar. He commended the performance of the team for scaling Mount Nun and Kun and congratulated the climbers for their great achievement. This awe-inspiring journey, which was taken after 42 years, showcases the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army and its mountaineers,” he added.
