SRINAGAR, JUNE 22: The Department of Physical Education & Sports in collaboration with NSS Wings of Amar Singh College celebrated the 9th International Yoga Day with a motto of spreading awareness about the Vedic Practice, Yoga and Meditation, under this year’s theme “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” which describes the desire for ‘One Earth, One family and One future’.
A large number of students from varied courses of the college participated and performed different Asanas demonstrated by Physical Director, Ravinder Kour.
The function was attended by Principal Amar Singh College, Prof Sheikh Ajaz Bashir; Convener Sports Committee, Prof Abdul Nayeem Khan; NSS Programme officers, Prof Shabnam Ara, Prof. Arshad Ahmad Masoodi, Prof Shahnawaz Muntazir and Members of Sports Committee.
Speaking on occasion, Prof Sheikh Ajaz highlighted the history of International Day of Yoga and briefed the students about the theme “Vasudaiva Kutumbakam”. He said that yoga is an old practice that originated in India and has been recognized by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as an International Day since 21st June 2015.
Prof. Ajaz maintained that Yoga has various physical and mental benefits. It helps in the reduction of stress, anxiety, depression, and other psychological problems. He added that yoga develops a positive approach and spreads positivity around. He also applauded the organizers for a successful event.
Prof Abdul Nayeem Khan, Convener Sports Committee, threw light on the goals of the programme and the importance of Yoga in the present era.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Physical Director, Ravinder Kour.
