Srinagar: Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on July 26 every year to mark our decisive victory in the war fought with Pakistan in 1999 in the icy heights of Dras, Kargil & Batalik sub-sectors.
“Our soldiers proved their mettle by gallant actions & unparalleled courage by evicting the enemy who had intruded into our territory. Along with our soldiers, the support rendered by locals of these areas is praiseworthy. The spirit, grit and determination displayed by locals in 1999 are alive & can be proudly felt even today. The seeds sown then have grown deep roots & connect of civil-military cooperation has evolved & strengthened over the years,” said PRO (Defence) Srinagar.
“In the run-up to the events of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Kargil Sentinels Brigade organized a victory run for local youths to relive the saga of the courage, the valour of our gallant soldiers & resolve, and commitment of locals. The victory run was attended by 100s of children from all schools of the Kargil district. Josh & patriotic fervour was seen & embraced by all the locals,” the PRO said.
“The guest of honour for the victory run was Mrs Dudhma Begum, wife of Late Naik Fateh Mohd, VrC, a resident of Dras who was the leading section commander of a Ladakh scouts company during the attack on a Pakistani Post in the western sector on 10 Dec 1971. He was awarded the Vir Chakra, posthumously for silencing a machine gun post, which was holding up the attack. The local authorities appreciated Army’s efforts in organizing constructive activities for local youths & motivating them to achieve greater heights,” he said.
