Srinagar: Police on Monday said it has arrested seven drug peddlers in Baramulla, Shopian and Awantipora and recovered contraband substances from their possession.    

At Khaitangan in Baramulla, police arrested a “wanted drug smuggler” Shabir Ahmad Rather, son of Ghulam Nabi Rather of Khaitangan and recovered  410 grams of cannabis-like substance from his possession.

Another “wanted drug peddler” Shoaib Aijaz Goru, son of Aijaz Ahmad Goru, resident of Kanispora was held at a checkpoint at Kanispora after police intercepted his vehicle (HR26BF-0973), and recovered 16 grams of brown sugar-like substance from his possession.

At Fatehpora, two “wanted drug smugglers” identified as Mohammad Humayan Sheikh, son of Mohammad Noor Hussain, and Mohammad Jiyaul Mostafa, son of Mohammad Saifuddin, both residents of Attar Dariyapur West Bengal; were arrested after 20 grams of brown sugar-like substance was recovered from their possession.

In Shopian, at a checkpoint at Habdipura near Pinjura, police arrested a woman drug-peddler – Parveena, wife of Ghulam Hassan, resident of Heerpora Shopian. Police said 658 grams of cannabis-like contraband substance was recovered from her possession. 

During questioning, she disclosed that she was to deliver the contraband substance to her husband Ghulam Hassan Sheikh, son of Abdul Gani Sheikh, who was waiting for her at Largam. Subsequently, police arrested her husband as well and recovered 90 grams of cannabis-like substance from his possession.

In Awantipora, a special checkpoint at Gallander, police arrested another woman drug peddler identified as Safeeqa Begum, wife of Mohammad Shaban Ganie of Lelhar Kakapora. Her search yielded 1.8 Kg of cannabis powder, police said. 

All the accused persons have been shifted to respective police stations where they remain in custody while cases under relevant sections of law have been registered and further investigations initiated, police said.
