Sarpanch arrested over drug peddling in Uri

Srinagar: Police in Baramulla have arrested a Sarpanch and recovered contraband substance from his possession, officials informed Wednesday.

At a checkpoint at Bela Boniyar, police intercepted Sarpanch Mohammad Amin Banday, son of Anayatullah Banday of Lari Boniyar, and recovered 21grams of brown sugar-like substances from his possession.

A case under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Boniyar and investigation has been taken up, police said.

Meanwhile, two more drug peddlers identified as — Shahanwaz Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Rashid Dar of Tulkhan Bijbehera, and Naseer Ahmad Dar, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, resident of Turk Tachloo — were arrested in Shopian and contraband substances and Rs 1.6 lakh in cash (proceeds of narcotics trade) cash recovered from their possession, police said.
