9 drug peddlers arrested with contraband substances

Srinagar: Police on Friday informed about the arrest of nine drug peddlers in Kulgam and Baramulla.

In Kulgam, police intercepted a suspicious vehicle (DL7CR-8749) with two persons onboard at a checkpoint at Khudwani Byepass. Yawer Ahmad Rather, son of Abdul Gani Rather of Waghama, Bijebhara, and Zeeshan Ashraf, son of Mohammad Ashraf Bakshi of Pehro Anantnag, travelling in the vehicle were arrested with 50 kgs of poppy straw, police said.

In Baramulla, one Mehraj-ud-Din Sofi, son of Mohammad Sidiq Sofi of Bazar Mohalla Pattan was arrested at Palhallan Morh with 200 tablets of Spasmoproxyvon and 10 bottles of codeine phosphate.

During routine patrolling at Dewanbagh Baramulla, police arrested two drug-peddlers — Irfan Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh; and Sharif Ahmad Sheikh, son of Abdul Rashid Sheikh, with 295 grams of cannabis.

Another drug-peddler — Sikwahat Khan, son of Balik Hussain Khan of Daragutliyan Uri – was arrested at Bela Boniyar with 28 grams of cannabis.

Sameer Ahmad Khan, son of Zahoor ullah Khan of Dawaran Uri, was arrested at a checkpoint in the main market Boniyar after 15 grams of heroin was recovered from his possession.

At Singhbagh Khawajabagh Baramulla, two drug peddlers were arrested and 250 grams of cannabis were recovered from their possession. They have been identified as Tariq Ahmad Sheikh, and Aashiq Ahmad Sheikh, sons of Faqir Mohammad Sheikh of Singhbagh Khawajabagh.

Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations and further investigations have been initiated, police said.
