The statement reads that as the incident caused a public outcry, Nowhatta police station under the supervision of SP North Raja Zuhaib took cognizance of the matter and multiple teams were formed to catch the culprit.

“Raids were conducted throughout the night and in the wee hours, the accused namely Irshad Ahmad Mir son of Mohd Sultan Mir of Maloora, Srinagar was arrested. A case under FIR no 100/2022 under section 153A of IPC was registered in Nowhatta PS,” it reads.

It added that during the initial investigation it came to the fore that he was involved in a similar incident earlier as well, an incident that happened under the jurisdiction of Safakadal PS last year.

“Prima facie the accused person seems to be of unsound mind. Further investigation in the case is underway and the public is requested to bring to the notice of police any additional facts and also to report all such incidents,” it added.

Meanwhile, people and the local Masjid committee appreciated the police for their swift action in arresting the accused person.
