As we all are aware of the fact that everything is created and controlled by one Lord who has written our faith and destiny, then why do practices like black magic and witchcraft continue to exist in our societies? What is the reason behind this?
The above-mentioned verse of ” Surah talaq ” is referring to the magicians, and seeking refuge from their evil, is a proof that the male and female magicians can cause harm and have an effect upon the person afflicted, by making him sick or other than that.
‘Black Magic’ is a major sin and it is from the gravest of the major sins because it is a disbelief in Allah. Magic is a kind of supernatural act which has an impact on men. Magic is that craft which is not prohibited only in Islam but in every other major religion. The magician can only become a magician by disobeying Allah and associating the partners with Him and obeying the shaitan and renouncing the book of Allah, the lord of all that exists.
Allah says about magic:
‘But they certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have any in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves if they only knew. (2:102)’
According to the book Qamus al-Lughah, magic means ‘to deceive. All such things, the causes of which are invisible and mysterious. In Quran it has different meanings some of them are:
- Deception and imagination, which are devoid of reality – like sleight of hand.
- Attracting the Satans by special means and seeking assistance from them.
Black Magic is the effect of the jinn and its practice is asking the jinn to do the things the magician wants them to do. Due to practising magic, we lose faith in Almighty Allah which is why it is considered disbelief to practice magic. Black Magic or witchcraft is attained through which the practitioner seeks help from the realm of jinn and shaitan. Magic is a term used for incantations and spells which affect the heart, body and wealth of the person afflicted. Some magic causes death, while another type of magic causes illness and some magic causes divisions between spouses. Some magic is real, while other magic is only illusionary. Even the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) himself was affected by magic done by the daughters of Labid.
The real magic affects the person afflicted such that it can cause death, sickness, separation between spouses and other than that as Allah said; And from them, people learn that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife ( Surah Al Baqarah; 2:102).
All Islamic jurists have declared the learning and practising of magic to be prohibited. Imam Ali (a.s) says: “One who learns magic, less or more, has become an infidel and his association with Allah (s.w.t.) s completely severed.”
Islamic tradition also holds that Muslims should rely on God alone to keep them safe from sorcery and malicious spirits rather than resorting to talismans, which are charms or amulets bearing symbols or precious stones believed to have magical powers or other means of protection
Black Magic is of the greatest and most dangerous evils. If it is spread throughout the community, it will destroy it and bring about the most severe harm. The magicians will increase in a country when the light of Tawheed is lessened, and when the clarification of Tawheed is lessened. when the people became ignorant of Tawheed and the correct aqeedah, the magicians can increase the land. But if the flag of Tawheed is raised and the dawah is strengthened, the magicians disappear, and they will be annihilated by the permission of Allah. For this reason, the people are in severe need of Tawheed being explained, clarified and established along with its opposite being warned against, and its opposite is Shirk (making a partner to Allah).
