Kulgam: Two Jaish-e-Muhammad terrorists were killed in an encounter in Ahwatoo village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday evening, a police spokesman said.

The security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation in Kulgam’s Ahwatoo area following information about the presence of terrorists there, said the spokesman.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists opened fire on the security forces, who retaliated.

He said that in the ensuing encounter both the terrorists, who belonged to JeM outfit, were killed and operation was over.

The official added that incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were also recovered from encounter site.

Notably, this was the second such encounter in the last 24 hours in Kulgam district.

On Monday evening, a Pakistani terrorist identified as Abu Hurairah, was killed in an encounter at Batpora area of Kulgam district. A soldier and two civilians were also injured in the encounter.

This year, 142 terrorists have been killed so far of which 34 were foreigners, officials said.

Earlier, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Kashmir Vijay Kumar said two JeM terrorists were trapped in the cordoned area.

“Two local #terrorists of proscribed #terror outfit JeM trapped in the ongoing #encounter. Both the trapped terrorists are involved in several terror crime cases,” Kumar said in a tweet.
