Srinagar: J&K unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday said that political leadership has no role in ‘detention’ of religious leaders as the same is decided by the security and intelligence agencies on the basis of their “involvement in anti-national activities”.

Addressing a press conference here, former minister and party J&K incharge, Sunil Sharma said the government has not initiated any specific drive in Jammu and Kashmir only as crackdown on anti-national elements is on across India.

“Political leadership has no role in detention of religious leaders; it is security and intelligence agencies that first investigate and then decide on the detection of an individual; detention is purely based on involvement in any subversive activity. Government has not initiated any specific drive in J&K as crackdown on anti-national elements is on everywhere in India,” Sharma said responding to a query on detention of several religious leaders in Kashmir under the Public Safety Act (PSA) recently.

He said the government is committed to eliminating anti-national elements and their support structure in Jammu and Kashmir.
