Srinagar: Two Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in the Sopore area of Baramulla district in north Kashmir on Wednesday were identified by the police today.

The encounter broke out in the Bomai area of Sopore town Wednesday night after the security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation, a police official said.

He said two terrorists were killed by the security personnel in the operation. A civilian also sustained injuries in the exchange of fire.

“The terrorists were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed,” a senior police officer said, adding that the duo was planning attacks on civilians.

“Killed JeM terrorists were categorised & identified as Mohd Rafi of Sopore & Kaiser Ashraf of Pulwama. Terrorist Rafi was earlier booked under PSA twice. Both were involved in several terror crime cases. As per input they were planning to attack civilians in Sopore area,” ADGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar tweeted.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman said that both the killed terrorists were categorized terrorists and involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on Police/SF and instigating youth to join terror folds.

“It is pertinent to mention that, killed terrorist Mohammad Rafi Lone had a history of terror crime cases including grenade attack on Police party near TP Bank Sopore in year 2017 and instigating/motivating gullible youth to join terror folds thereby trying to revive the terror folds in Sopore area for which he was earlier booked twice under Public Safety Act (PSA),” the spokesman said.

He said that incriminating materials, arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation. In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated.
