Srinagar: A cop and a militant were injured during an encounter in Nowhatta area of Srinagar downtown on Sunday on the eve of the Independence Day, police said.

“Chance #encounter started in Nowhatta area of #Srinagar. Police & CRPF are on the job. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone police wrote on Twitter.

A police official said bike-borne militants fired at a police party near Redpora Park, Sazgaripora Nowhatta, which was retaliated.

During the encounter, one policeman sustained injuries, the official said.

Sometime later in an update, police spokesman informed that a militant was also injured in the shootout.

“SrinagarEncounterUpdate: In the ongoing #encounter, one police personnel namely Ct Sarfaraz Ahmad R/O Batote Ramban got injured. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment. One #terrorist also got injured. Search still going on. Further details shall follow,” he added.

Police recovered a motorcycle and an AK rifle from the spot, he said.

More details of the incident were awaited while this report was being written.

Another gunfight was reportedly underway in Rajouri.

A gunfight broke out between militants and security forces in Sujan area of Rajouri district in Jammu division on Sunday evening, officials said.

Quoting the officials, news agency GNS reported that the encounter broke out after a team of police and army launched a cordon and search operation in the area following a specific input.

As the joint team approached the suspected area, the hiding militants fired upon the party leading to an encounter, the officer added.

Intermittent exchange of fire was going on at the time this report was filed.

Cop killed in grenade attack in Kulgam

A policeman was killed in a grenade attack in Kulgam district of south Kashmir, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Qaimoh area of the south Kashmir district on Saturday night.

“A grenade incident was reported yesterday night in Qaimoh #Kulgam. In this #terror incident, 01 police personnel namely Tahir Khan R/O Mendhar, Poonch got injured,” Kashmir Zone Police wrote on Twitter.

The police said the injured personnel was shifted to the GMC hospital in Anantnag where he succumbed to injuries.
