Militant killed in encounter in Baramulla; 3 security personnel injured

Srinagar: An unidentified militant was killed and three security personnel were wounded in an encounter in Baramulla district of north Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

The security forces had received information about the presence of militants at Wanigam Bala in Kreeri area of the district, following which a cordon and search operation was launched there by police along with the troops of Army’s 29RR and SSB 2nd Bn, police said in a statement.

It said during the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, “the hiding terrorist fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter.”

In the initial exchange of fire, two Army soldiers and a police personnel received injuries and were shifted to hospital for treatment where their condition is stable.

In the ensuing encounter, one militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of the encounter. However, the identification and affiliation of the slain militant is being ascertained, police said.

It said incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including one AK-47 rifle, three AK magazines, seven AK rounds, one pouch and one bag were recovered from the site of the encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.

In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated.

People are requested to cooperate till the area at the encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any, police said.
