First Para-Athletic Meet of Kashmir to be held at IUST

Awantipora: Directorate of Physical Education & Sports, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora marked an important milestone for sports as the Directorate will organize its first Para-Athletic Meet and first Inter-College Athletic Championship of Kashmir from June 22-23, 2022.

Athletes, including para-athletes from different parts of the valley, with more than a hundred athletes from different educational institutes of Kashmir are participating in this championship. The competitions shall include short/middle and relay races, long jump, shot put and javelin throw. All the competitions of the tournament will be conducted as per the Regulations of the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations), followed in world University games.

The competitions shall be held on IUST Synthetic Athletic Track, which is the only international standard athletic track in Jammu and Kashmir. The athletic track was developed under Khelo India Scheme with a project outlay of Rs. 6.09 cr from the Government of India.

The mission of NEP-2020 is to help foster a holistic development of students and emphasis on sports therefore becomes primary. In keeping with this central tenet of the education policy, IUST vouches to support and coordinate activities in sports, remain committed to and constructively engaged in the NEP-2020 sports policy and organize more such events in the future to create and promote a culture of fitness.

Dr. Hilal A Rather, Assistant Director, Directorate of Physical Education & Sports, IUST while talking about the development of appropriate sport-specific measures underscored the importance of this event. He said, “The focus of such events is on the development of sports and the empowerment of youth through sports and physical activities. These sports championships also help to promote cultural integration among the people.”
