Soldier killed in Kokernag encounter, militants manage to flee

Srinagar: An Army soldier was killed in an encounter between militants and security forces at Watnar Kokernag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday while as, reportedly, the three militants hiding in the area have managed to flee.

Official sources said that on an input “regarding the presence of terrorists in the area, an operation was launched in Watnar Kokernag. Terrorists opened fire that was retaliated. However, in the initial exchange of fire, on soldier sustained injuries.”

They said that injured soldier, sepoy Neshan Singh of 19RR received serious bullet wounds.

“He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, however he succumbed to his injuries”, they added.

The exchange of fire continued for some time and more reinforcements were rushed to the spot and cordon layers tightened further while a search operation was launched in the area.

However, sources said that reportedly the three hiding militants have managed to give a slip to the security forces.
