Civilian killed, cop among 24 others hurt in grenade attack in Srinagar

Srinagar: A civilian was killed while 24 others, including a policeman and several women, were injured after suspected militants hurled a grenade at security forces in the crowded Amirakadal Chowk of the city here on Sunday, police said.

At about 4:20 pm, terrorists hurled a grenade upon police and security forces deployment at Amirakadal Chowk (Hari Singh High Street), a police official said.

He said a policeman and 24 civilians including many women received splinter injuries in the explosion at the crowded marketplace.

The injured were rushed to the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital, where a civilian succumbed to his injuries, the official added.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Aslam Makhdoomi (70), son of Mohammad Amin, a resident of the Makhdoom Sahib locality in Nowhatta area of the city, while the injured cop was identified as John Mohammad.

The injured civilians have been identified as Dilshada from Balhama, Shazia from Bohrikadal, Najma from Rawalpora, Suhani from Kulgam; Kausar from Bemina; Farhana and Rafiya from Hazratbal; Attira Jan from Kupwara; Dr Shazia from Bandipora; Zoya from Nowhatta; Ulfat from Badarwan Kupwara; Fiza from Pampore Pulwama; Parveena from Batamaloo; Nimba Abbas from Kulgam; Mohammad Haroon from Mehjoornagar; Mehrajudin from Soiteng Srinagar;  Ghulam Mohammad from Baghi-Mehtab; Riyaz Ahmad from Mehjoornagar; Ayaz Rashid from Hazratbal, and Kaisar Ahmad from Kupwara.

Doctors treating the injured at the SMHS Hospital told ‘Kashmir Images’ that around 24 injured persons were brought to the hospital and all of them were stable.

Following the grenade blast, senior police officers reached the spot and the area was briefly cordoned off.

Police spokesperson in a statement about the incident quoted IGP Kashmir as saying that police are working hard for identification and arrest of the person(s) involved in today’s grenade attack and will smash this grenade throwing module at an earliest.

He also said that police have got some vital clues and the investigation is rigorously going on in the right direction.

Meanwhile, police have registered cases under relevant sections of law in respective police stations and investigations have been initiated, spokesperson said.
