Srinagar: With improvement in weather conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, the MeT office Srinagar today forecast mainly dry weather till January 16 at most places in the Union Territory.

An official of MeT department, however, said that light rain/ snow may occur at scattered places of J&K during next 24 to 48 hours.

He said that thereafter, weather is likely to remain dry till January 16 with gradual rise in day temperature and fall in night temperature.

Meanwhile, Gulmarg reeled under extreme cold as the minimum temperature fell below the freezing point at most places in the valley, officials said on Sunday.

The resort recorded a low of minus 10 degrees Celsius, a drop of more than five degrees compared to the previous night’s minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, MET officials said.

They said Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, dropping more than degree.

Srinagar was the only place to record minimum temperature above freezing point as it settled at 0.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday night, the officials said

They said Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, while the nearby south Kashmir town of Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius.

The mercury in Kupwara settled at a low of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius.
