Locals demand desilting of Nallah Khrusoo, removal of encroachment along its embankments

Sopore: Residents of Tarzoo area of Sopore in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district Tuesday demanded complete desilting of Nallah Khrusoo and urged the district administration to remove illegal encroachments along its embankments for its full restoration.

Residents said that the Nallah Khrusoo which originates from Puthkha to Lalad and Amargrah and ends at river Jhelum, has been encroached at various places by people. The Irrigation department has been not only unsuccessful in the maintenance of the canal, but it has also failed to wipe out the silt from the canal and restore it. “The Irrigation Department has been desilting other minor canals but it continues to ignore their repeated pleas.”

“Khrusoo canal has not only damaged the standing crops but some residential structures too,” said Aijaz Ahmed, Patron Central Auqaf Tarzoo.

“Despite our repeated pleas, the Revenue and Irrigation & Flood Control department has done nothing to restore the canal to its original position”, he said.

When contacted Executive Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control department Sopore, Javed Ahmed Sofi, said that the desilting process on the Khrusoo canal will be started soon and the department will also initiate action against illegal encroachments.
