Two militants killed in Kulgam, Srinagar

Kulgam/Srinagar: An unidentified militant was killed in an ongoing encounter at Chawalgam village of southern district of Kulgam on Thursday, police said.

A senior police officer said an encounter broke out between security forces and the militants after contact with the militants was established in the afternoon.

The official said that police, Army’s 9 RR and the CRPF cordoned off the suspected spot and offered the hiding militants to surrender. “The militants refused and instead fired at the forces. In the ensuing gunfight, one unidentified militant was killed,” the officer said.

Kashmir zone police tweeted that unidentified militant was killed in an ongoing encounter at Chawalgam while the operation was still on.

Police said that the operation got delayed due to the darkness and that the cordon has been tightened to ensure remaining militants aren’t able to flee.

“Lights have been installed to keep a watch on the spot where militants are hiding,” they said.

Meanwhile, an unidentified militant was killed in a brief shootout  at Bemina area of Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district on Thrusday.

Kashmir police Zone on its official Twitter handle wrote, “SrinagarEncounterUpdate: 01 unidentified militant killed. 01 AK rifle alongwith ammunition recovered. Search going on. Further details shall follow”.

Earlier reports said that a joint team of Police and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Bemina.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering a gunfight.
