Srinagar: A policeman was shot dead by militants in the Batamaloo area of the city on Sunday, officials said.

He was identified as Constable Tausif Ahmad, they said.

“At about 8 pm, terrorists fired upon JKP Constable Tausif Ahmad near his residence at SD Colony, Batamaloo,” the officials added.

They said the cop was critically injured and was taken to the SMHS Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Meanwhile, Police is a statement issued tonight said that at about 2015hrs Srinagar Police received information about a terror crime incident at S.D Colony Batamaloo area of Srinagar. Senior police officers reached at the terror crime spot.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that terrorists fired upon one Police personnel at S.D Colony Batamaloo area of Srinagar. He has been identified as Ct. Tawseef Ahmad Wani son of Late Mohammad Usman Wani resident of S.D Colony Batamaloo. In this terror incident, he had sustained grievous bullet injuries and was shifted to nearby hospital for the treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom,” Police statement said.

It further said that Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the circumstances which lead to this terror crime. Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on.

Meanwhile, the National Conference (NC) condemned the attack.

“Unequivocally condemn the cowardly & dastardly attack on 29-year-old policeman in Batmaloo, Srinagar in which he lost his life. No words of condemnation would be enough! May Allah grant him a place in Jannat. Our hearts go out to his family and friends at this time of grief,” the party tweeted.

While condemning the killing, Peoples Conference chairman, Sajad Lone tweeted: “Yet again an addition to army of orphans and widows. Pained to hear about the killing of Constable Touseef Ahmed. My heartfelt commiserations to the family. Inshallah Allah will grant Jannat.”

Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also condemned the killing terming the incident as a highly reprehensible act while asserting that the radical forces in J&K have only added to the existing woes of the people.

“Since decades this pointless violence has fallen as a curse on the local populace while filling their lives with ceaseless miseries and dejection. Numerous widows and orphans are still yearning for their lost loved ones. Today’s dastardly act at Bemina has added another precious human life to this senseless bloodshed,” he remarked.
