Civilian injured after being shot at by soldier in Bla; Army says, he tried to snatch weapon

Srinagar: Militants fired at and injured a civilian in a Shopian village in south Kashmir on Wednesday evening.

Reports said that militants fired upon a civilian at Chitragam Kalan area of Shopian. The bullet hit his right leg and he was shifted to Zainapora hospital.

The injured person, identified as Javeer Hameed Bhat, 22, son of, Ab Hameed Bhat of Chitragam, Shopian is running a readymade garmnt shop in the locality.

Though the injured has no affiliation, political or whatsoever, he reportedly is son of a police man, reports said.

Meanwhile, a Police spokesman, while giving the details about the incident said that “today at about 2145hrs Shopian Police received information about a terror crime incident in at Chitragam Kalan area of Shopian where terrorists had fired up on a civilian.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that terrorists had fired upon a civilian identified as Jeever Hameed Bhat (shopkeeper by profession) son of Ab Hameed Bhat resident of Chitragam Shopian.  In this terror incident, he received gunshot injuries in his leg. He has been evacuated to nearby hospital for treatment where his condition is said to be stable.”

The spokesman said that Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law.

Meanwhile, an auto-rickshaw driver was injured on Wednesday after a soldier allegedly opened fire at him in Baramulla district of north Kashmir, officials said.

Mohsin Manzoor of Iqbal Colony received injuries in his leg when the soldier of a patrolling party in Azadganj opened fire at him, they said.

Confirming the incident, a top police official of the district said a youth was injured in a firing incident by an army party at Azadganj. “Investigation has been started by District Police Baramulla,” DIG North Kashmir, Baramulla, Sujith Kumar was quoted as saying by a news agency.

News agency KNO quoted SSP Baramulla Muhammad Rayees Bhat as saying that “different versions are coming; we are ascertaining the facts as to what exactly happened.” He said the injured civilian is stable, and that a case has been registered and investigations taken up.

However, a statement issued by the Police said that today 1235hrs, Baramulla Police received information that some gunshots were heard from Azad Gunj Chowk area of Baramulla and a civilian identified as Mohsin Soleh resident of Arampora has been hit and injured. Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 211/2021 under relevant sections of law was registered at PS Baramulla and investigation was initiated.

“The injured was shifted to hospital with bullet injuries in his legs where his condition is stated to be stable. In this connection, statements of eye witnesses, family and other bystanders acquainted with facts and circumstances are being recorded besides, evidences including CCTV footage etc is also being collected and analyzed.

“Pertinently, later on concerned Army unit also reported about the said incident in concerned police station as an attempt of weapon snatching by the said injured person, who had a history as an OGW,” said the police statement.

Meanwhile, defence spokesman in a statement said that Mohsin Manzoor, son of Manzoor Ahmed Shallay, “sustained injuries when he tried to snatch the weapon from a soldier on protection duty who was deployed at the market place in Azadganj Chowk, Baramulla. Individual was shot in the legs to thwart the weapon snatching attempt.”

The spokesman also said that Mohsin Manzoor “has a history of being on the wrong side of the law. He had earlier assaulted a soldier on duty in similar circumstances around two months back.”

The statement said that the individual (Mohsin) was counselled by the army on that occasion and was let off on the assurance of the family members.

“The individual also has a past police record, in which a case for stone pelting during the year 2012 and 2014 had been registered against him. He had earlier gone missing on 21 Aug, 2019 and was apprehended on Oct 05, 2019 at Kralahar Naka, Kanispura in a military operation. Subsequently, he was released from custody on Jun 22, 2020,” the defence spokesman claimed.
