Militants flee, leaving behind arms, after brief encounter with forces in Srinagar

Srinagar: Militants fired at a security forces’ party in Noorbagh locality here on Saturday but there was no loss of life, police said.

A brief encounter broke out between militants and a joint team of police and paramilitary CRPF at Noorbagh area in the old city here late Saturday afternoon. However the militants, believed to be four in number, managed to flee from the scene, sources said.

“A small team of Police while laying cordon came under fire from #terrorists in Noorbagh #Srinagar,” the Kashmir Zone Police said on its official Twitter handle.

Police said while the militants managed to escape, they left behind some arms.

One Chinese pistol and AK-47 rifle that were recovered from the encounter site, police said, adding that the whole area was later cordoned off to track the fleeing militants.

Meanwhile some youth resorted to stone pelting on deployed forces in the area in which scores of people including a journalist working with a news gathering agency were injured.

Police lobbed tear-smoke shells to disperse the stone-pelting mob to maintain law and order in the area, officials said.
