Baramulla: Residents of Shaltang village near Sheeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Wednesday staged a protest demonstration against the Jal Shakti department over shortage of water in the area.

The protesters, including women and children blocked Sheeri Zogiyar road at Shaltang for hours alleging that for the last three months they were without drinking water, while the concerned department has not been paying any heed to their problems.

They said that they are being forced to consume water from nearby streams and a local Mundri Nallah where animals too are drinking water, exposing them to contract water borne diseases.

Meanwhile, Junior Engineer (JE) Jal Shakti Department, Ghulam Hassan, said that the department has requested all the consumers to stop water supply to their kitchen gardens because the water source is limited for general public and department has allotted another 3-inch pipeline from Zogiyar to Shaltang which will address the issue.

The aggrieved residents appealed to the Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Bhupinder Kumar, and Executive Engineer Jal Shakti department Baramulla to personally intervene into the matter.
