Srinagar: At least 10 civilians were injured in a grenade attack by militants on security forces in the busy Amira Kadal area of the city on Tuesday, officials said.

“Terrorists lobbed a grenade towards security force personnel near Amira Kadal bridge which exploded by the roadside leaving 10 civilians injured,” the officials said.

The injured were shifted to SMHS hospital for treatment, while security forces cordoned off the area to nab the attackers.

A statement issued by Police said, “Today at about 1445hrs, terrorists hurled a grenade at Hari Singh High Street area in District Srinagar. Senior Police officers immediately reached at the terror crime spot.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that terrorists hurled a grenade towards Bunker of 40Bn SSB at Hari Singh High Street area of district Srinagar. However, the grenade missed the intended target and instead exploded on road resulting in minor injuries to 10 civilians who were evacuated to nearby hospital for the treatment of their injuries”.

Meanwhile, security forces on Tuesday arrested a person from Lal Chowk area here and recovered two grenades from him, police said.

Police identified the arrested person as as Aadil Farooq, a “journalist” who works with a local news agency.

A resident of Khrew Pampore in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, Farooq was arrested near Makkah Market, Lal Chowk in Srinagar, a police official said.

During a search of his bag, two hand-grenades were recovered, he said.

Farooq works as a journalist with a local news agency, the official said.

A Police statement said that following a grenade attack in HSH Street, all the entry/exit points in and around Lal Chowk area were sealed and all the Nakas/checkpoints across the City Srinagar were activated.

“During the intensive checking, a joint naka party near Makkah Market apprehended a suspicious person and upon the search of his bag recovered 02 live grenades. He has been identified as Adil Farooq Bhat son of Farooq Ahmad Bhat resident of Khrew Pampore, a journalist working as Sub-Editor with CNS News Agency.

“It is pertinent to mention that the arrestee Adil Farooq was arrested earlier also in Feb-2019 and detained under PSA for his involvement in providing logistics as well as other support to the active terrorists operating in Khrew area”.

The statement said that Police have registered cases under relevant section of law regarding both the incidents and investigation is going on vigorously from all the angles viz-a-viz today’s grenade throwing incident and subsequent recovery of two live grenades. More arrests are expected and further details shall follow.
