Militant killed in Aharbal encounter identified

Srinagar, Jul 27: Police on Tuesday said the militant who was killed in an encounter with the security forces in Gurwattan Aharbal are of Kulgam district on Monday evening was associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit.

Police identified the slain as Amir Yousuf Mir alias Haider, son of Mohammad Yousuf Mir, resident of Chek-e-Cholin, Shopian.

In a statement here, police spokesman said even as the operation was suspended during the night due to darkness, in the wee hours today search of the area was continued and “dead body of the killed terrorist was retrieved from the site of encounter”.

As per police records, Amir Yousuf Mir alias Haider was “A+ categorized terrorist”. He was active since 2017 and was involved in several cases including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities.

He had a long history of “terror crime cases which included firing upon the motorcade of SP Shopian at Landoora Hermain Crossing in which the vehicle of SP Shopian got damaged, kidnapping of three police personnel from their homes at Batagund Kapran area on 21/09/2018 and subsequently killing them.”

He was also involved in a series of attacks on police, security establishments, police statement said, adding that he was “also part of a group involved in firing upon the Army Camp at Mantribugh Shopian and Police Station Shopian, besides threatening local Panchs.”

Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including one AK-47 rifle, one Pistol and three-AK magazines were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other cases, police said, adding a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigations initiated.
