Srinagar: Former Cabinet Minister and Apni Party Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir on Tuesday termed the mauling of 22 sheep in a leopard attack at Rambailpora-Kunzer as unfortunate and urged the wildlife department to dispatch teams on ground to assess the situation.

In a statement issued here, Mir said that such an incident has instilled fear among the locals and roaming of a leopard in the area is highly concerning.

“The wildlife department must dispatch teams to the area and lay traps to capture the wanton wild animal before any ominous man-animal incident happens,” he said.

He also impressed upon the Wildlife Department to devise a comprehensive strategy in order to put a check on increasing cases of man-animal conflict.

“The destruction of wildlife habitat besides dropping stray dogs on the edges of forest cover has led to the emergence of these wild animals to roam around the human habitable areas. The Wildlife Department must act promptly in this regard,” he said.

Furthermore, Mir urged that appropriate compensation should be given to the owner who lost livestock in this nocturnal mauling incident.
