Locals demand compensation for family of ASHA worker of PHC Sheeri who died of COVID

Baramulla: Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) of Primary Health Center (PHC) Sheeri, who worked tirelessly for Covid-19 patients and got hundreds of people vaccinated, finally fell to the virus herself — despite having taken both doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

Three days ago Khalida, wife of Ghulam Nabi Dar of Sheeri, developed complications like chills and high fever. Her family took her to hospital wherefrom she was shifted to Covid-19 designated hospital at Indoor Stadium where she died today.

“Yesterday the date for my daughter’s marriage was fixed, and as soon as the guests left in the evening, she (Asha worker – Khalida) felt uneasy and developed high fever. We shifted her to GMC Baramulla where he condition deteriorated and doctors suggested shifting her to Covid hospital where she died,” her husband Dar said.

Health official and locals termed Khalida a dedicated frontline worker.

“She got hundreds of people vaccinated for Covid-19. She would visit Covid-19 patients and provide them awareness and education regarding sanitization and other preventative measures,” said Dr. Azhar.

She was recently awarded for her hard work and dedication as frontline Covid-19 warrior.

As body of the ASHA worker reached her native village, pall of gloom descended there as she was laid to rest as per Covid-19 protocols.

“Khalida was people and patient-friendly Asha. She has done so much for the people here and today she sacrificed her life,” a local resident Abdul Rashid Tantary said.

Relative of slain Asha, Javid Ahmad Dar appealed government to provide compensation to the family as her death has left the poor family shattered.

Sarpanch Sheeri, Ghulam Rasool said that Khalida was always at frontline — be it during immunization, vaccination, or heath awareness. We have lost a dedicated ground-level health worker to deadly pandemic.

“Department of Health and Lt. Governor should come forward to help the poor family,” he added.
