Amid spike in coronavirus cases, India boosts capacity for tougher challenges ahead

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday recorded 1,526 new coronavirus cases, including of 226 travellers, taking the total of infected people to 1,46,692, even as six fresh deaths in the past 24 hours took the toll to 2,057, officials said.

Out of the fresh cases, 979 were from the Kashmir Valley and 547 were from Jammu division of the union territory, they said.

The officials said Srinagar district recorded the highest of 520 cases, including of 63 travellers, followed by 299 cases in Jammu district and 122 in Baramulla district.

They said Budgam reported 70 cases, Pulwama 76, Kupwara 23, Anantnag 50, Bandipora 44, Ganderbal 14, Kulgam 47, Shopian 13, Jammu 299, Udhampur 29, Rajouri 28, Doda five, Kathua 51, Samba 20, , Poonch three, Ramban 24 and Reasi 88.

The number of active cases has now reached 11,467 in the union territory, while 1,33,168 patients have recovered so far, the officials said.

In past 24 hours, they said, 963 more COVID-19 patients have recovered—541 from Jammu division and 422 from Kashmir Valley. Currently, there are 11467 active positive cases in J&K—4254 in Jammu and 7213 in Kashmir, they said.

The death toll in the union territory due to the pandemic is 2,057 as six fresh deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours. Officials said three deaths each were reported from Jammu division and Kashmir Valley. The victims from Kashmir include 50-year-old man from Kunzer Tangmarg in Baramulla district, 75-year-old man from Bemina Srinagar, and 85-year-old man from Chakpath Anantnag.
