Shopian/Sopore, Mar 13: A gunfight broke out between militants and security forces on Saturday evening in Rawalpora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district, officials said.

Quoting officials, news agency KNO reported that a joint team of police, Army’s 34 RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter.

A senior police officer also confirmed the exchange of fire while sources said that two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area.

The gunfight was going on when the report was filed.

Meanwhile, two policemen were injured in a grenade attack by militants in Baramulla district of north Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

The militants hurled a grenade at a police post at Sopore bus stand in the district, a police official said.

He said the two policemen sustained injuries in the blast and were taken to an Army medical facility for treatment, where their condition is stated to be stable.

The injured cops have been identified as Constable Azad Ahmad and Special Police Officer (SPO) Mohammad Afzal.
