Srinagar: A three-day awareness campaign initiated by the University of Kashmir on public health and hygiene concluded on Wednesday.

Student volunteers from various university departments participated in the campaign which culminated at Mughal Garden Nishat.

The campaign, organised under Government of India’s flagship Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, was inaugurated on Monday by Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad.

Dean of Students Welfare Prof Raies A Qadri said the student volunteers went inside dozens of Dal Lake areas to raise awareness on good health and good hygiene. Hundreds of posters urging maintenance of personal hygiene and cleanliness of surroundings were also distributed among people during the past three days, he said.

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the volunteers urged people to continue wearing face-masks, maintain social distancing and go for regular hand-washing.

Prof Qadri thanked the DSW staff and student volunteers for their active participation in the campaign.

On Wednesday, the student volunteers interacted with shopkeepers and local residents at Nishat and urged them to make use of dustbins and ensure proper disposal of waste.

Cultural Officer DSW Shahid Ali Khan said their department will continue to hold such awareness programmes in line with the university’s commitment to develop a greater societal connect and address some of the pressing social and environmental problems.
