Bhaderwah: Five people including three women were killed on Monday when their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Doda district, a senior police official said.

Doda Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mumtaz Ahmed said the accident occurred around 7.10 pm near Raggi Nallah, 20 km from Doda town.

“The private vehicle, bearing a temporary registration number valid till March 04, was on way from Doda to Batote when its driver lost control and fell into the deep gorge,” the SSP said adding that police had launced rescue operation.

Officials identified five of the deceased as Rakesh Kumar, his wife Mamta Devi and daughter Samrita Devi, Babli Devi (all residents of Ganika village) and Chander Rekha of Nagri village.

The identity of the sixth victim, a toddler, which was awaited was later confirmed to have miracleously survived the accident, KNO- a local news agency said in a late night report reahihg here.

Quoting police sources, KNO reported that during initial investigation five bodies were found lying at the gorge. “We launched a rescue operation at the accident site during which three-year-old Anaya, daughter of deceased Ajit Singh was found lying nearby who escaped miraculously in this tragic accident,” the officials informed.

The surviving girl suffers minor injuries and was stable, they said, adding that she has been shifted to Doda district hospital for treatment.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Doda Dr. Sagar D Doifode aslo confirmed that five persons got killed in the accident and one minor girl was injured.
