Leopard spotted in Machipora Tangmarg; rescued after hectic efforts

Tangmarg: A leopard was caught after hours of hectic operation by police and wildlife department in Merchipora Tangmarg village after the wild animal mauled an elderly local in the village.

Locals said that a leopard was spotted atop a tree by the villagers of Merchipora on Wednesday morning. “As people gathered around the tree, the leopard panicked.”

“While coming down from the tree, the leopard attacked an elderly person Mohammad Ramzan Ganai son of Habibullah Gaanai, a resident of Merchipora Tangmarg who was rushed to the nearby hospital for treatment,” locals said

Later, the leopard took shelter in a cow shed as the people gathered outside to take pictures of the wild cat.

After locals informed the police and wildlife department about the presence of a leopard in the area, a police party of PS Tangmarg and the wild life team reached on the spot.

“After strenuous efforts of Tangmarg police and Wildlife department, the leopard was finally captured after three hours,” said a wildlife official.

Locals of the area appreciated the wildlife department and J&K police for their immediate efforts to rescue the leopard.
