Srinagar: Bomb disposal squad of the Army on Tuesday destroyed an unexploded shell which was recovered from a field in Chowki Handan village of Nowshera in Rajouri district.

A police official said that on Monday late evening, people from Chowki Handan village of Nowshera saw a suspicious thing lying in fields of the village after which the police and Bomb Disposal Squad of army rushed to the spot.

“On Tuesday morning, the shell was destroyed through a controlled explosion carried out by the Bomb Disposal Squad of the Army,” he said.

The explosion rattled the entire village, he said, adding that they were investigating the exact nature of the shell. “It was either a rocket fired with a high-range weapon or an anti-tank guided missile that is target-specific,” said a source.

He said that it is likely that the shell was fired from across the Line of Control on Sunday evening when several shells fell in the residential areas.
