6-year-old drowns in water tank in school

Baramulla: A 5th standard student drowned in river Jhelum while taking bath at Mohra Gingal in Uri on Wednesday afternoon in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Locals said 10 year old Mohammad Momeen son of Javaid Ahmad Chalkoo, a resident of Silikote, Uri had gone to his relatives’ home in Gingal. While taking a bath in river Jehlum, he drowned.

Soon after the incident, the locals rushed to the spot and tried to retrieve the body but they didn’t succeed. Later, teams comprising of Police and Civil administration besides local volunteers reached the spot and started rescue operation. However the body was not fished out till last reports came in.

SHO Uri Mohammad Ashraf said that the rescue operation is on. “We have even told the NHPC to close down the dam so that his body can be retrieved,” he said.

Police has registered a case in this regard has been registered and further investigation has been taken up.
