Srinagar: While expressing anguish over routine potable water scarcity in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir, CPI(M) Secretary Ghulam Nabi Malik Saturday urged the authorities to take immediate steps to overcome the problem.

A large number of areas in Srinagar city, South and North Kashmir are reeling under acute water crisis for the last several months. Taps in several localities were running dry and women in particular were facing huge hardships due to water shortage, Malik said in a statement issued today.

“Women have to go out of their homes to fetch water which is unfortunate. Amid the coronavirus outbreak, residents are facing an acute shortage of drinking water due to the damaged distribution system and worn out pipes,” he said.

He further said that the water shortage has even triggered protests in different parts of the valley. People have taken to streets, blocked roads, and raised slogans to attract the attention of the authorities towards their plight.
