Jammu, June 25: A Mumbai based “cheat” has duped a woman of 9.19 lacs via Shadi.com, Crime Branch Jammu officials said on Thursday.

In a statement issued here, the officials said: “Crime Branch Jammu registered a formal case against a Mumbai based cheat- Rajeev Bharanatti S/O late BasavrajBharnatti R/o Flat No-104 MahavirDarshan Plot No-5A Sector-06 KoparKhairnee, NaviMumbai for inducing and duping a Jammu based woman lecturer to the tune of Rs 9.19 lacsvia Shadi.com. Both the accused and the victim came to know each other on the matrimonial site and remained in constant touch until the complainant was duped.”

“A written complaint was received in Crime Branch Jammu that complainant came in contact with the accused through a matrimonial site – Shadi.com in the year -2015 and remained in constant touch with him on telephone. Later the accused demanded some money from the complainant on the pretext of ailment of his father, who was to purportedly undergo treatment and kidney transplant, with the assurance that he would return the same,” they said adding, “The complainant trusted the accused and transferred money from her Bank account to different account Numbers of the accused to the tune of Rs 9.19 lacs on different occasions. After some time the accused kept on avoiding the complainant and ultimately did not attend her calls. This led the complainant to the suspicion that she has been duped.”

“Taking cognizance of the matter, Crime Branch Jammu initiated a preliminary verification in light of the contents of the complaint and during the course of enquiry, it is prima facie established that complainant has actually been cheated and duped by the accused of her hard earned money after inducement via matrimonial site (Shadi.com). Commission of offences under section 420/IPC against said accused person was established and a formal case has been registered for in-depth investigation,” they added.
