Srinagar: One person died of COVID-19 infection in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, taking the number of fatalities to six as 40 new more from Kashmir tested positive today.

A 70-year-old man hailing from Baramulla district became the sixth person to die due to COVID-19 in the union territory, officials said here.

The person, a resident of Tangmarg area of the north Kashmir district, died at the SKIMS hospital in Bemina here on Saturday morning, the officials said.

The patient had tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to the hospital on April 13, they said.

This is the sixth death due to coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir and the second from Tangmarg area, the officials added.

A 75-year-old man hailing from Sopore area of Baramulla district died on April 17.

A 61-year-old female patient from Udhampur passed away at the GMC, Jammu on  April 8 while a 54-year-old man hailing from Bandipora district had died a day earlier.

A 65-year-old man from Srinagar was the first fatality in Kashmir on March 26 followed by another man of the same age from Tangmarg in Baramulla district who died on March 29.

With 40 fresh positive cases the number of confirmed cases in Jammu and Kashmir has climbed to 494.

This was the first time in the UT that over 1,000 samples were tested within a span of 24 hours, the officials said.

“Finally, J&K breaks the 1,000-test barrier — 1,071 samples tested in the last 24 hours. But that also means more positives. So 40 new cases today,” government spokesperson Rohit Kansal said.

All the fresh cases are from Kashmir, he said.

Of the total 494 cases, 437 are in the Valley and 57 in Jammu region, Kansal said, adding that 109 patients have recovered so far.

“Till date 66343 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which include 6324 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 263 in Hospital Quarantine, 376 in hospital isolation and 10974 under home surveillance. Besides, 48400 persons have completed their surveillance period,” a media bulletin issued here today said.

The Bulletin further said that out of 12835 test results available, 12341 samples have tested as negative till April 25, 2020.

Moreover, 03 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and discharged, 01 from SKIMS Soura and 02 from CD Hospital Jammu.

Providing district-wise breakup, the bulletin said that Bandipora has 116 positive cases wherein 93 are Active Positive, 22 recovered and 01 has died, Srinagar 83 positive cases with 54 Active Positive, 28 recovered and  01 died; Shopian has 63 positive cases with 52 Active Positive, 11 recovered; Baramulla 55 positive cases with 40 Active Positive, 12 recovered, and 03 died; Kupwara has 46 positive cases with 40 Active Positive and 06 recovered; Anantnag district has 37 positive case and all are Active Positive; Ganderbal has 14 positive cases with 12 Active positive and 02 have recovered; Budgam 14 positive cases of which 05 are Active Positive with 09 recovered cases; Kulgam has 06 cases and all are Active Positive; Pulwama 03 positive cases who all have recovered.

Similarly, Jammu has 26 positive cases of whom 19 are Active Positive and 07 have recovered, Udhampur 20 positive cases of which 11 are Active Positive, 08 recovered and 01 died, while as Samba district has 04 positive cases and all are Active Positive; Rajouri has 04 positive cases, 01 active positive and 03 cases have recovered;  Kathua has 01 positive case which is active positive; Ramban has 01 positive case who is Active Positive. Meanwhile, Kishtwar has only 01 positive case who has recovered.
