Medical Check-up, Blood Donation Camp organised at R S Pora

JAMMU, MARCH 01: Mission Director (MD), National Health Mission (NHM), J&K Bhupinder Kumar today inaugurated a one day mega health check-up cum blood donation camp today at Udas Marg, R S Pora, Jammu.

The camp was organised by NHM J&K in collaboration with Directorate of Health Services, GMC Jammu and an NGO SHAMAA.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhupinder Kumar emphasised on importance of screening for Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) since they are the leading cause of adult mortality and morbidity worldwide. He said that the focus of the camp is to simultaneously disseminate message on promotion of healthy life style as there are common preventable risk factors for Cancer, Diabetes, hypertension, Cardio vascular diseases, stroke and common cancers like cervix cancer, breast cancer and oral cancer. Since NCDs do not exhibit symptoms until complications set in, it is essential to detect them early which not only enables onset of treatment but prevents high financial costs and suffering, he added.

The inaugural function was attended by Chief Medical Officer, Jammu, Head of Department, Blood Transfusion Services, Govt. Medical College Jammu, State Nodal Officer, NHM, J&K, Chairperson Shamaa foundation, Block Medical Officer, R.S. Pora and senior Officers of Health and other departments.

Besides screening, special focus was laid on creating awareness among masses about various risk factors of NCDs, health education, hygiene, donation of blood by voluntary non–remunerated donors etc.

The camp was attended by more than 500 people who were screened for various ailments and were provided with free medicines by a team of specialist doctors including Physicians, Gynaecologists, Orthopedic Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, ENT specialists and Dental Surgeons. A large number of people including soldiers from 42 BN B.S.F came for voluntarily blood donation. The blood donation camp was coordinated by team of doctors from Blood Transfusion Department, GMC, Jammu.
