Srinagar: Suspected militants on Sunday evening fired at a personal security officer (PSO) of National Conference leader Syed Tawqeer in Hillar area of Kokernag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The PSO later succumbed to his injuries.

“In a terror incident at Hiller area of Anantnag district, terrorists fired upon a policeman on duty identified as Riyaz Ahmad, causing grievous injuries to him,” a police spokesman said.

The injured constable was rushed to hospital, but he succumbed to injuries, police said.

The police have registered a case and started investigation into the incident.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah condemned the killing of the policeman.

He said Ahmad was posted as security officer to former judge Syed Tauqeer, who had joined politics few months ago.

“My colleague from Kokernag in South Kashmir Judge (Retd) Tauqeer Sb was just attacked by militants. While he escaped unhurt, his security officer was hit and killed in the line of duty. I unreservedly condemn this dastardly attack & convey my condolences to the family of the deceased,” the former chief minister tweeted.

Strongly condemning the attack on National Conference leader Syed Tauqeer Ahmad in which his Personal Security Officer PSO Reyaz Ahmad was killed CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has termed the incident as heinous and unfortunate.

In a statement issued here today Tarigami said “such incidents are inhuman and unfortunate. Violence in any form and manifestation is condemnable.”

He expressed sympathy with the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, two people were injured in a mysterious blast in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday, police said.

“The blast occurred in Adigam village in which two people were injured. They were evacuated to a hospital for treatment,” a police spokesman said.

He said a case has been registered and investigation launched into the circumstances in which the blast occurred.
