Srinagar, Jun 21: A gunfight broke out between militants and counter-insurgent forces in Keshwan forests of Kishtwar district on Friday.

Reports said that a joint team of the Army and SOG of police launched a cordon-and-search operation in Keshwan forests after inputs about the presence of militants.

They said that as the forces intensified searches towards suspected spot the hiding militants fired upon government forces triggering an encounter.

When last reports came intermittent firing was going on.

Pertinently, on May 31, two special police officers (SPOs) were injured in a gun-battle with militants during an operation in Appan area of Marwah belt in the district. However, the militants managed to escape after the encounter.

Kishtwar, which was declared militancy-free over a decade ago, was rattled by the killing of state secretary of BJP Anil Parihar and his brother Ajeet Parihar on November 01 last year, followed by assassination of senior RSS leader Chanderkant Sharma and his security guard inside a health centre on April 09.
