Srinagar: The World Environment Day was celebrated at Army Good Will School Uri, to spread awareness among the students, about the issues concerning the environment in general, and air pollution in particular.

A defense spokesman in a statement said that the students of all classes were encouraged to actively participate in the celebration, as well as become active agents in developing environmental safety measures. Among the activities organized by the students, under the guidance of their teachers, were Drawing and Painting, Plantation Drive, and Quiz Competition.

At the end of the celebrations the students were more aware of the environment that they have inherited and how to preserve and protect it. They vowed to keep it clean and healthy by regularly undertaking environmental drives.

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year. It is the United Nations principal initiative for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. It was first celebrated in 1974, and since then has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on environmental issues. World Environment Day has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year has a new theme. The theme for 2019 was “Air Pollution”.
