Army officer suffers gunshot injury in Ladakh

Srinagar, May 31: An Army officer was injured in a firing incident in the Ladakh region on Friday, a defence spokesman said.

“An officer deployed in the Pratap Pur Sector suffered gunshot wound at around 1050 hours today (Friday),” Srinagar-based defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said.

He said the injured officer was immediately evacuated to a nearby military hospital and is under treatment.

Details of the incident are being ascertained, the spokesman said.

However, news agency GNS said it was a case of “suicide”.

The army officer of colonel rank identified as Rohit Singh Solanki of 6 MAHAR regiment, posted at Siachen Glacier, shot himself with his service rifle near Paratpur area of Nubra sub division, GNS reported.

It said that the Quick Reaction Team personnel immediately shifted the officer to nearby army’s health facility where he was declared dead on arrival.

A police officer said that they have taken cognizance of the incident and launched an investigation.
